CFC Aiming for Safety LogoIs the Canadian Firearms Safety Course mandatory?

No. not unless you fall into one of the following three groups:

  • You are a minor (Under 18)
  • You are coming off a legal prohibition order
  • You want to become an FAC Instructor
Anyone else can simply challenge the exam(s) without taking the course or courses. In fact, we have processed hundreds if not thousands of such candidates, both in our classroom facility and at the fall Hunting Show for the past several years. The pass rate is reasonably good, provided the candidate has a reasonable grasp of firearms safety, some recent experience and is familiar with the laws.

You will be asked to show safe handling of several firearms and walk through several scenarios, as well as responding to some multiple choice questions.

to some sample exams to help you decide whether to take the course(s) or simply challenge the exam(s). To help you prepare, you should go through the full exams on this site before challenging the test(s).
